Metric/Imperial Units of Length

This week we will be learning about metric and imperial units of length in Maths. I hope that the information below helps.

Metric units of length:

• millimetre
• centimetre
• metre
• kilometre

1cm = 10mm

1m = 100cm

1km = 1000m

Imperial units of length i.e. United Kingdom:

• inch (inches)
• hand (hands)
• foot (feet)
• yard (yards)
• mile (miles)

1 inch = 2.5cm

1 hand = 4 inches

1 foot = 12 inches (30cm)

1 yard = 3 feet

1 mile is 1650m

Did you know that the height of a horse is measured in HANDS?

Converting from miles to km:

multiply by 8 and divide by 5 (or divide by 5 and multiply by 8)

i.e. 200 miles = 320km

Converting from km to miles:

multiply by 5 and divide by 8 (or divide by 8 and multiply by 5)

i.e. 160 km = 100 miles
