Reading and Spelling - Starting 22nd of October

With Reading the expectation is for the children to read on Mondays and Wednesdays, as homework, although we strongly encourage you to listen to your child read more often.  Reading exposes your child to new English vocabulary and is a skill needed in order to access the rest of the curriculum. For those children who do like to read more often than this - we are happy to change their book more frequently.

With Spelling the children will be tested on 20 spellings every 2 weeks.  This will be at a time your individual teacher chooses. If the spellings are 'tricky words' then they need to be learnt by on sight recognition and a list will be sent home and they will be posted on the blog. There is no easy way to learn these than traditional repetition.   If it is a 'sound pattern' the children are learning, then they will be given a set of words (more than 10) containing the sound as part of a worksheet activity.  Here they are encouraged to sound out the words into their individual sounds. They will be tested on a random selection of 10.
