Children know that early explorers thought the Earth was flat- they were afraid they might fall off the edge of it if they sailed too far in one direction! It was not until explorers, such as Fracis Drake had sailed all the way around the Earth that people accepted it must be shaped more like a sphere.
But the fact that the Earth was spherical and not flat gave map makers a problem and we found out why!
