Length Word Problems

Choose a section: Blue & Green or Red.

  • Remember to answer the question(s) in a sentence and use the units in your answer.



BLUE (One-Step Problems):


  1. John is 162cm tall. His brother Harry is 127cm tall. How much taller is John than Harry?


  1. Sarah walks 250m to get from home to the shop. Her school is a further 375m down the road. How far does she live from school?


  1. Stephen has 4.5m of ribbon to wrap 3 identical presents. What is the maximum amount of ribbon he can use for each present?



GREEN (One and Two-Step Problems):


  1. A gardener plants bulbs (type of plant) in a row, 15cm apart. If he plants 10 bulbs, what is the distance between the first and last bulb in the row?


  1. Sam is 98cm tall. A tree in his garden is three times as tall as he is. What is the height of the tree in metres and centimetres?


  1. Karen runs 1547m of a 3km race. How far does she still have to run?


RED (Two-Step Problems):


  1. Mary uses 2 pieces of wrapping paper from a 3m roll. One is 75cm long and the other is 90cm long. How much paper is left on the roll?


  1. Peter has a garden 6 metres long. Fence panels are 150cm long. How many panels does he need to stretch the length of the garden?


  1. A boy measures 1m70cm. His sister measures 138cm. What is the difference between their two heights?

  1. Paul wants to make 3 shelves: one 120cm long, another 95cm long and the third 115cm long. He has a plank of wood 3m long to cut the shelves from. Does he have enough wood? Explain your answer.
