Fashion Popular Culture

Dear Parents,

Over the next 5 weeks third grade will be following a unit a unit of work on a theme
that focuses on “Popular culture”. This unit has been chosen because there are many
objectives that will allow the children to explore and learn about the cultural aspects of El
Salvador and other countries around the world.
This unit of work is part of the International Primary Curriculum. This new curriculum
sets out very clearly what children will learn — the learning goals — in three different
areas:
1. The subjects of the curriculum — the learning goals for each of these subjects are
very interesting and challenging for young children.
2. Personal development — the characteristics which will help the children become
responsible, independent learners.
3. International understanding — which will help children develop a sense of the
independence of their own country and culture and the interdependence between
countries and cultures.
Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for
one or more of the subjects. During this unit we will be focussing on History,
Technology, Art, Music, Science, Society and International.
In History, we will be finding out:

•  About fashions and trends in the past, and what might have influenced these.

In Technology we will be finding out:

• How to design and make our own ‘street fashion’
•  How to design a costume for a fictional character

In Art, we will be finding out:

• How to print our own t-shirts
•  How to create art in the style of a specific artist

In Music, we’ll be:

• About different genres of music
• How to compose our own piece of music

In Science, we will be finding out:

• About the use of colour and reflective materials in safety clothing

In Society, we will be finding out:

• About who or what influences our choice of fashion

In International, we will be finding out:

• Where some of our popular brands of clothing and sporting equipment is made
• About what is considered fashionable in our home and host countries

All of the work we are going to do has been specially written to help your child reach
the learning goals. Children will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating,
performing, working on their own and working in groups. We will be checking to see
how well your child has learned through particular activities and by asking children to
explain their work, perhaps to you.
We already know the interest you take in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss
with your child the work they have done as the unit progresses and let them teach you
if they can.
If your child has some work to research, please help them, but without actually doing
the work. If you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme
please take it, as your enthusiasm and interest is most important.
By the end of the unit, we hope your child has achieved all of the learning targets. We
hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom and we hope you have enjoyed
seeing your child work with enthusiasm. If you have any comments about the work

Estimados padres de familia:

Durante las próximas 5 semanas, seguiremos una unidad de trabajo cuyo tema se
enfoca en la “Cultura Popular”. Se ha escogido esta unidad porque hay varios
objetivos que les permitirán a los alumnos explorar y aprender acerca de los aspectos
culturales de El Salvador y otros países alrededor del mundo.
Esta unidad de estudio es parte del Currículum Internacional de Primaria
(International Primary Curriculum). Este nuevo currículum define claramente lo que
los alumnos van a aprender – las metas de aprendizaje – en tres diferentes áreas:
1. Las materias del currículum — los objetivos de aprendizaje de cada una de estas
materias son muy interesantes y son además un reto para los alumnos.
2. Desarrollo Personal — las características que ayudarán a los niños a convertirse en
estudiantes responsables e independientes.
3. Entendimiento Internacional — el cual ayudará a los niños a desarrollar el sentido de
la independencia de su propio país y su cultura y la interdependencia entre países y
culturas.
Cada unidad de trabajo esta fundamentada alrededor de objetivos específicos
derivados de las metas de aprendizaje y de una o más materias. Durante esta unidad,
nos estaremos enfocando en Historia, Tecnología, Arte, Música, Ciencia, Sociedad e
Internacional.
En Historia, aprenderemos:

• Sobre modas y tendencias en el pasado y lo que podrían haberlas influenciado

En Tecnología, aprenderemos:

• Como diseñar y hacer nuestra propia 'street fashion'
• Como diseñar un traje para un personaje de ficción

En Arte, estaremos aprendiendo:

• Como imprimir nuestras propias camisetas
•  Como crear arte siguiendo el estilo de una artista específico

En Música, estaremos aprendiendo:

• Acerca de diferentes géneros musicales
• Como componer nuestra propia música

En Ciencia, aprenderemos:

• Acerca del uso del color y materiales reflectantes en la ropa de seguridad

En Sociedad, aprenderemos:

• Acerca de quién o qué influye en nuestra elección de moda

En Internacional, aprenderemos:

• Adonde se fabrican algunas de nuestras marcas de ropa y artículos deportivos
• Acerca de lo que se considera de moda en nuestro país y en otros países

Todo el trabajo que haremos ha sido escrito para ayudarle a su hijo a alcanzar los
objetivos de aprendizaje. Los niños leerán, investigarán, escribirán, ilustrarán,
ejecutarán, trabajando solos y en grupos. Estaremos pendiente de ver que tan bien su
hijo ha aprendido por medio de distintas actividades y pidiéndole que explique su
trabajo, en algunas ocasiones, a ustedes.
Ya conocemos el interés que ustedes tienen en el trabajo de su hijo. De ser posible,
por favor discuta con su hijo el trabajo que ha hecho conforme avanza la unidad, y si
es posible, déjelo que le enseñe.
Si su hijo tiene algún trabajo que investigar, por favor ayúdele - pero sin hacerle el
trabajo! Si tiene la oportunidad de ahondar en sus ideas sobre este tema, por favor
hágalo pues su entusiasmo y su interés son lo mas importante.
Para el final de la unidad, esperamos que su hijo haya alcanzado todos los objetivos de
aprendizaje. Esperamos que haya disfrutado de su tiempo en el aula; y esperamos que
usted haya disfrutado viendo a su hijo trabajar con entusiasmo. Si usted tiene algún
