IPC Unit Do you live around here?

Dear Parents,

 

Over the next 6 weeks third grade will be following a unit of work on a theme that focuses on “Homes and habitats”.  This unit has been chosen because there are many objectives that will allow the children to explore and learn about the housing in El Salvador.

This unit of work is part of the International Primary Curriculum. This new curriculum
sets out very clearly what children will learn — the learning goals — in three different
areas:

1. The subjects of the curriculum — the learning goals for each of these subjects are very interesting and challenging for young children.

2. Personal development — the characteristics which will help the children become responsible, independent learners.

3. International understanding — which will help children develop a sense of the independence of their own country and culture and the interdependence between countries and cultures.

Each unit of work is based around specific targets derived from the learning goals for one or more of the subjects. During this unit we will be focussing on Geography, Technology, History, Art, Science and International.

 

In Geography, we will be finding out:

• About the homes around the world
• About the ways in which different people live their lives
• About homes in our home countries and host country

In Technology, we will be finding out:

• How to design a comfortable shelter
• How to make mud bricks
• How to make a shelter from straw
• How to design a house using local materials

In History, we will be finding out:

• About the different homes we have lived in
• Whether homes in the local area have changed

 

In Art, we will be finding out:

• About prehistoric cave paintings
• How to make paints from natural materials
• About folk art such as sand painting
• About artists who are inspired by the local habitat

 
In Science, we will be finding out:

• About different habitats within the school grounds
• How to investigate a local habitat
• About Pond life and how it has adapted
• How to sort animals into groups
• Who eats who-food chains and food webs
• Seasonal changes to habitats and migration

In International, we’ll be:

• About homes and habitats in different countries
• About habitats global importance that are at risk

All of the work we are going to do has been specially written to help your child reach the learning goals. Children will be reading, researching, writing, illustrating, performing, working on their own and working in groups. We will be checking to see how well your child has learned through particular activities and by asking children to explain their work, perhaps to you.

We already know the interest you take in your child’s work. If you can, please discuss with your child the work they have done as the unit progresses and let them teach you if they can.

 

If your child has some work to research, please help them, but without actually doing the work.  If you have the chance to further their interest in the ideas of this theme please take it, as your enthusiasm and interest is most important.

 

By the end of the unit, we hope your child has achieved all of the learning targets.  We hope they have had an enjoyable time in the classroom and we hope you have enjoyed seeing your child work with enthusiasm. If you have any comments about the work your child has done, please get in touch.

Estimados Padres de Familia:

Durante las próximas 6 semanas, tercer grado estará aprendiendo a través de una unidad de trabajo cuyo objetivo principal son “Casas y Hábitats”.  Esta unidad ha sido elegida por los muchos objetivos que permitirán a los niños aprender acerca de la vivienda en El Salvador.

Esta unidad de estudio es parte del Currículum Internacional de Primaria (International Primary Curriculum). Este nuevo currículum define claramente lo que los alumnos van a aprender (las metas de aprendizaje) en tres diferentes áreas:

 

1. Las materias del currículum — los objetivos de aprendizaje de cada una de estas materias son muy interesantes y son además un reto para los alumnos.

 

2. Desarrollo Personal — las características que ayudarán a los niños a convertirse en estudiantes responsables e independientes.

 

3. Entendimiento Internacional — el cual ayudará a los niños a desarrollar el sentido de la independencia de su propio país y su cultura y la interdependencia entre países y culturas.

 

Cada unidad de trabajo esta fundamentada alrededor de objetivos específicos derivados de las metas de aprendizaje y de una o más materias. Durante esta unidad, nos estaremos enfocando en Geografía, Tecnología, Historia, Arte, Ciencia e Internacional.

 

En Geografía, aprenderemos:

• Acerca de los diferentes tipos de casas alrededor del mundo
• Acerca de las diferentes maneras en que las viven personas
• Acerca de la vivienda en nuestro país y en otros países

 

 

En Tecnología, aprenderemos:

• Como diseñar un refugio cómodo
• A hacer ladrillos de lodo
• Como fabricar un refugio de paja
• Como diseñar una casa utilizando materiales que se pueden adquirir localmente

 

En Historia, estaremos aprendiendo:

·         Acerca de las distintas casas en las que hemos vivido

·         Si las casas de nuestra región han cambiado con el tiempo

 

En Arte, aprenderemos:

• Acerca de las pinturas en cuevas prehistóricas
• Como hacer pinturas utilizando materiales naturales
• Acerca del arte popular y el uso de minerales teñidos
• Acerca de los artistas que toman su inspiración del hábitat local

En Ciencia, aprenderemos:

• Acerca de los distintos hábitats que existen dentro de las instalaciones del colegio
• Como analizar un hábitat local
• Acerca de la vida en el estanque y su adaptación
• Como clasificar a los animales en grupos
• Quien come que en la cadena alimenticia
• Cambios en los hábitat y las migraciones de acuerdo a las estaciones del año

En Internacional, aprenderemos:

• Acerca de las casas y los hábitats en diferentes países
• Acerca de la importancia global de los hábitat que se encuentran en riesgo

 

Todo el trabajo que haremos ha sido escrito para ayudarle a su hijo a alcanzar los objetivos de aprendizaje. Los niños leerán, investigarán, escribirán, ilustrarán, ejecutarán, trabajando solos y en grupos. Estaremos pendientes de ver, que tan bien su hijo ha aprendido por medio de distintas actividades y pidiéndole que explique su trabajo, en algunas ocasiones, a ustedes.

Ya conocemos el interés que ustedes tienen en el trabajo de su hijo. De ser posible, por favor discutan el trabajo que ha hecho conforme avanza la unidad, y si es posible, déjelo que le enseñe.

Si su hijo tiene algún trabajo que investigar, por favor ayúdele (pero sin hacerle el trabajo)  Si tiene la oportunidad de ahondar en sus ideas sobre este tema, por favor hágalo pues su entusiasmo y su interés son lo mas importante.

Para el final de la unidad, esperamos que su hijo haya alcanzado todos los objetivos de aprendizaje. Esperamos que haya disfrutado de su tiempo en el aula y esperamos que usted haya disfrutado viendo a su hijo trabajar con entusiasmo.
